Celebrating Student Volunteers

Student volunteers play an important part in Hounslow Citizens Advice. They often offer new ideas and fresh perspectives when problem solving. Volunteering can give students practical experience to go with their learning and a chance to play a part within their community. Aline has outlined the reasons that she started to volunteer with Hounslow Citizens Advice (see below).

Hounslow Citizens Advice wants to say a big thank you to all our student volunteers, you’re amazing!

Q&A with our student volunteer, Aline

1. What made you decide to start volunteering?

As a law student, I wanted to gain practical experience that would help develop skills relevant to my future career as a lawyer. I was looking to improve my communication skills, and volunteering seemed like the perfect way to do that while also making a positive impact.

2. Why did you choose Citizens Advice Hounslow?

I chose Citizens Advice Hounslow because it offers an opportunity to gain experience that is closer to law experience. It is a great opportunity to learn more housing and benefits issues, Plus, the work they do is of high value to the community, and I wanted to feel that I am part of it.

3. What is your role?

I currently work as a General Adviser, firstly taking calls with Adviceline, and sometimes I help with the drop-ins. My position as a volunteer involves speaking with clients about their issues, offering guidance, and helping them find the right options or next steps.

4. What does a typical day look like for you when volunteering?

A typical day starts with a briefing where we go over any important updates or changes. After that, I spend most of my time speaking to clients either over the phone or in person.

5. What do you enjoy most about volunteering with Citizens Advice?

What I enjoy most is being able to help people, especially when I can speak in my own language to assist a client who might feel more comfortable that way. I also enjoy the team I work with and how they value volunteer’s service.

6. Have you learned anything new?

Absolutely! Volunteering has been a big learning experience. I’ve improved my knowledge in areas like Universal Credit, housing issues, and other benefits areas. It’s also helped me improve my communication and problem-solving skills, which will be good in my future career.

7. Would you recommend volunteering with Hounslow Citizens Advice to others?

Definitely! Hounslow Citizens Advice is a welcoming and supportive environment where volunteers are given the tools and training they need to succeed. The supervisors are great at helping us understand the complexities of each case, which allows us to improve our skills and knowledge.
